Deputy Editor in Chief of Bloomberg News Reto Gregori spoke on Artificial Intelligence, automation, and their impact on journalism in a special lecture at the Asian College of Journalism. He said that new technology brought with it both threats and opportunities for journalists. Robots were already capable of reporting on the ‘What’ in news, and could produce stories faster, more accurately, and on a larger scale than humans. But humans were still needed to explain ‘Why’ by providing context, giving readers perspective and being able to judge what was truly newsworthy. According to Gregori, automation was used in jobs which were boring and mundane, giving journalists more time to work on stories that people find compelling.
