TV STUDENTS: THE BBC COURSE

The BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) runs a section of the syllabus for the TV students. Half of the TV class will complete the course in the second term, the other half in the third term.

FREE AND FAIR REPORTING

An experienced BBC journalist is sent from the UK each year to run the course. The aim is to train students to broadcast and write using the BBC values of accuracy, objectivity and independence. High production values are also a key feature of the course; students are shown how to connect with audiences using creative camera and edit techniques.

NEWSROOM TRAINING

The course is very practical in nature. The trainer will offer several classes in basic skills such as balanced script writing, newsgathering, sources and writing to pictures. Master classes are then held in shooting and editing for TV news. The students are soon thrown into a live newsroom environment, putting a programme on air every day. The roles are rotated, so that each student has experience of every function in the newsroom. By the end of the course, participants will be experienced in news editing, reporting, presenting and producing, as well as being competent camera operators and picture editors. They will also be taught all studio operations, such as floor producing and sound and video mixing.

SPECIAL REPORTS

Each student is required to make a 5-10 minute special report during the last weeks of the BBC course. The aim is to put all the techniques learnt into practice. Previous students have produced in depth features on diverse subjects such as illegal kidney donation, street children, transgenders and the disappearing tribal art of snake catching.

BBC Certificate in Television Journalism

Those who successfully complete the BBC TV Journalism Course will be awarded a BBC certificate.
