K P Narayana Kumar Memorial Award for Social Impact Journalism

Sukanya Shantha Prema Sridevi and Himanshu Kala won the K P Narayana Kumar Memorial Award for Social Impact Journalism. The winning entry titled, ‘Manual scavengers: Shit hits our head in manholes, our co-workers have died | Govt says ‘no deaths’, is an account of the lives and deaths of sanitation workers in Delhi, focusing on the human condition. The documentary feature film was produced by The Probe.

Sukanya Shantha won the K P Narayana Kumar Memorial Award for Social Impact Journalism, 2020. Shantha’s winning entry, ‘From Segregation to Labour, Manu’s Caste Law Governs the Indian Prison System’, published in The Wire, looks into ongoing caste discrimination in jails across the country.

Shiv Sahay Singh’s story titled ‘Death by digital exclusion: On faulty public distribution system in Jharkhand’ published in The Hindu was declared the winner of the inaugural K. P. Narayana Kumar Memorial Award for Social Impact Journalism.
