ACJ student wins award

Shafna Hussain, a student of the Asian College of Journalism (ACJ) and a reporter with Sun Online in the Maldives, won the prestigious Journalist of the Year Award (Social Reporting) at the Maldives Media Council’s Journalism Awards 2019, held on December 6, 2020 in Malé.

Hussain won the award for a piece she penned and published on Sun Online on November 4, 2019 about a sexual abuse case in an island of the Maldives archipelago, where two adolescent girls were victimized at a place of worship.

Hussain is currently pursuing her post-graduate diploma at ACJ as a SAF-Madanjeet Singh Scholar.

At the journalism awards function held this December, Journalist of the Year was also selected in other categories such as investigative journalism, business and economy, environment and sustainability, sports journalism, political reporting, court reporting, photojournalism, and feature-writing.

The Maldives Media Council is a semi-self regulatory body of press publications in the Maldives, formed by the Maldives Media Council Act (15/2008). The Council started its journalism awards programme in 2014.
