T. G. Narayanan Memorial Lecture on Social Deprivation

Delivered by Dr. Reetika Khera on “Aadhaar, Welfare and the Media” December 10, 2018

The seventh T. G.  Narayanan Memorial Lecture on Social Deprivation was delivered by Reetika Khera, Associate Professor at IIM, Ahmedabad, at the M. S. Subbulakshmi Auditorium in the Asian College of Journalism on December 10, 2018. The lecture titled ‘Aadhaar, Welfare and the Media’ highlighted the various challenges in implementing Aadhaar as a compulsory proof of identity. Aadhaar’s implementation, apart from its technical challenges, has acutely impacted several sections of the society.  Prof. Khera gave examples of how marginalised and underprivileged sections of the population such as women, children and the disabled have faced particular difficulty in accessing welfare schemes of the government, such as MGNREGA, PDS and the MDM. She concluded her lecture by discussing the trajectory of the media in reporting on Aadhaar and its role as a ‘watchdog’ in highlighting important issues.
