Mihir Dalal, a prominent commentator on India’s fast-growing startup sector, spoke to the ACJ Bloomberg students on reporting the startup beat.
Dalal discussed how companies craft narratives to shape perception, the influence of venture-capital firms, and why growth often outweighs profitability in a startup’s early trajectory. He also broke down concepts such as the “reality distortion field” and “network effects,” and explained their impact on the broader ecosystem.
About 70% to 80% of capital raised by Indian startups comes from roughly half a dozen investors, Dalal said. The author of Big Billion Startup: The Untold Flipkart Story outlined how relationships between limited partners and venture-capital funds shape investment flows in startups.
Dalal asked students to build diverse sourcing networks and maintain frequent contact with them, noting the sector’s high attrition.
