Understanding personal finance: A lecture by seasoned writer Monika Halan on July 6, 2021
Monika Halan, the author of Let’s Talk Money, used her lecture at the Asian College of Journalism to help aspiring business writers understand the origin and importance of personal finance journalism.
The former Mint consulting editor explained how the emphasis on the needs of an individual investor has transformed business journalism.
Halan advised students to start investing early and walked them through her ‘six habits required for building financial fitness’. She also talked about the importance of reading ‘The Intelligent Investor’ and similar magazines.
She tapped on her experience as the former consultant at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy to highlight the problems faced by investors while discussing the reforms that are necessary to improve the current state of market regulation.
She exposed students to various investment options including insurance, stocks and mutual funds, and encouraged them to deepen their knowledge of the financial world so that they could be efficient journalists.
