Screening of the film Neeli Raag

Swati Dandekar’s film Neeli Raag was screened at the Asian College of Journalism in association with the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage, on February 22, 2019.

The film narrates the history behind the cultivation of the cash-crop indigo and also follows the rise and fall of this natural dye. It follows the lives of Yellappa and a few of the remaining indigo makers to showcase the reality and process behind its creation. The documentary allows the viewer to experience every part of the indigo-making process, from the leaves to the finished cloth and even to when it is being sold.

Dandekar, who teaches cinema at Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Bangalore, focused on this story as this was a dying art that she felt shouldn’t be lost. After the screening, she answered questions with regard to the film and also admitted that the indigo saree she was wearing was made by one of the craftsmen in her movie.
