Interactive session with Leon Brown, Head of Global Meteorological Operations, The Weather Company – February 26, 2019

The students of the Asian College of Journalism had a virtual interactive session with Leon Brown, Head of Global Meteorological Operations, The Weather company, IBM Business, as part of a technology based weather curriculum to train the students on how to report weather and also forecast it.

The agenda of the session was to make the students aware of the different types of weather, how they impact India and how they can be monitored to make forecasts.

The students were shown how data was used to track the recent cyclones Titli and Gaja that had ravaged the country and how the information helped limit the extent of damage caused.

Other phenomena such as floods, thunderstorms, dust storms and air pollution were discussed.

Brown talked about how aeroplanes, weather balloons, anemometers, sunshine recorders, radiation sensors and radars were now being used to observe and predict the weather, showcasing just how far modern day technology has advanced.

The students were introduced to the Weather Underground app and wunderground.com which give free weather updates. They are available for Android and iOS devices.
